The Jon P. and Meredith M. Beckett Charitable Fund
Jon and Meredith Beckett established this fund in 2017 to invest in organizations that support animal welfare and historical preservation in the City of Fredericksburg, as well as Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.
When Meredith retired as a private chef and caterer in 2008, she channeled her energies into local causes she's passionate about.
Central Rappahannock Heritage Center had an ad in the paper seeking volunteers to help preserve local history. Today she continues to be as committed to the organization as she was to her career.
"[We saw that] there's a pie representing support for history and preservation and it only has so many slices." The Beckett's want the fund they established to support the rich system of preservation programs and projects in our area.
"Fredericksburg is just oozing with history," she says. "Functioning as a significant port town for centuries, including our roles in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, continuing into the civil rights movement. There are so many important stories here. This information needs to be protected."
Meredith also volunteered at the Fredericksburg SPCA as Coordinator of Foster Care. This was an eye-opening experience. A no-kill shelter is an admirable endeavor, but this approach creates a real need for foster care. The Beckett's would like to see their fund help prevent abuse and neglect of animals, such as promoting spay and neuter efforts or programs that educate the community on the consequences of viewing animals as disposable pets.
The Community Foundation is grateful to Meredith and Jon for joining the society of donors willing to take action on behalf of the Fredericksburg region.
