AGENCY NAME: PASS Program PROGRAM TITLE: After School Step and Education Team AMOUNT AWARDED: $760.00 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: The ASSET project offers area youth the opportunity to participate in an enriching after school activity, where they have the opportunity to be physically active, serve the community, develop leadership and teamwork skills, receive academic tutoring, and a chance to explore and develop artistic creativity. Participants develop their own step routines, are required to maintain a C and above grade average and are required to prepare community service presentation bi-monthly. (PASS is offered to the parents of short term suspended youth as an alternative to the traditional suspension process~ they provide students with academic tutoring, community awareness education, character education and the opportunity to conduct and participate in service learning projects. AGENCY NAME: Ladysmith Baptist Academy PROGRAM TITLE: Youth Theater Program AMOUNT AWARDED: $885.00 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: For students in the 6th through 12th grades in PD16. The youth will act, sing, dance, build sets, design costumes and experience all other activities associated with theater- even directing! They will perform 3 different plays for 200 to 300 audience members involving 30 to 40 students in the program. The director has experience in running a similar program in NY where the program expanded to cable TV and won many State and National Awards. They hope to repeat the process here. AGENCY NAME: DASH PROGRAM TITLE: Community Kitchen and Café AMOUNT REQUESTED: $2,500.00 YIP RECOMMENDATION: $00.00 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: Based on the national “Youth Build Model” the agency plans to open a “community kitchen and café which will focus on teaching young people about the food service industry. The programs will serve as a youth training center for both classroom and on the job training. The plan is to donate prepared and perishable food to low income families in the Locust Grove community. AGENCY NAME: Caroline's Promise PROGRAM TITLE: Nursing Home Adoption AMOUNT AWARDED: $2,500.00 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: The Bowling Green Healthcare put out an urgent request for community members to become actively involved in the lives of senior citizens in the health facility (120+). The Youth Ambassadors (45) took that challenge to fill the emotional healthcare of the residents. Currently the make monthly visits to the site and last year held a successful “Senior prom”. They would like to continue this program with the help of YIP they are looking for funding to help pay for expenses such as decorations, food, flowers, invitations and photos.
AGENCY NAME: Hospice Support Care Children's Bereavement PROGRAM TITLE: Camp Rainbow AMOUNT AWARDED $1,000.00 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: Camp Rainbow is a weekend camp for children that have lost a parent, sibling, grandparent or other relative or friend, Children are partnered with volunteer “ Big Buddies” throughout a weekend of nature, fun and friendship. AGENCY NAME: Hope House PROGRAM TITLE: Camp High Hopes AMOUNT AWARDED $1,000.00 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: Camp High Hopes is a six week long summer camp for the children that live at Hope House and the Thurman Brisben Center. The program is will be held at the YMCA on Deacon Road. AGENCY NAME: Spotswood Elementary School PROGRAM TITLE: Boys By The Books AMOUNT AWARDED: $630.00 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: The purpose of Boys By the Books is to involve male reluctant readers in the purchase of high interest library books, and to update the aging non-fiction section of our library. The activities involve learning to identify appropriate books and examining, evaluating, and recommending male oriented non- fiction books for purchase. Grant money will be used to purchase the books. AGENCY NAME: Rappahannock Area Kids on the Block, Inc. PROGRAM TITLE: Making the Right Choice for Me! AMOUNT AWARDED: $725.00 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: RAKOB goal is to form a team from experienced RAKOB Teen Puppeteers and “as risk” teens from local BBBS and Boys and Girls clubs and to train these youth in puppetry arts and prevention topics such as ~ alternatives to violence, gangs, prejudice, alcohol and drugs. These students will in turn provide this program to “community summer programs for a risk elementary and middle school youth.
