Community Group Awards Local Grants

Spotsylvania & City Extra, The Free-Lance Star, Fredericksburg, VA

The Youth in Philanthropy Project, a youth driven program of the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region announces six grant awards in this region.

Grants ranged from $500 to $1,000 and were awarded to:
  • Youth in Public Interest Law: sponser, Rappahannock Legal Services. A grant of $700 was awarded, and the money will help cover expenses for a youth intern to work for the organization during the summer.

  • Operation Safe Home: sponsesr, Caroline's Promise Youth Advisory Council. A grant of $1,000 will be used on a project to meet the immediate and basic home safety needs for the elderly or disabled in the Caroline County Area. Youth will coordinate the project.

  • Teen Parent Scholarship Fund: sponser, Spotsylvania Social Services. A grant of $1,000 will help the program work with teens who wish to finish high school.

  • Peer to peer violence prevention prgram: sponsor, Rappahannock Council on Domestic Violence. An $800 grant will help develop a team of 15-17 year old men who will make presentations to teens at the Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Center.

  • Youth REACH Out: sponsor, Tower of Deliverance Church. A grant of $1,000 will fund a community meal that will be served to poor people. The money will also provide basic hygiene supplies to those in need.

  • Straight Talk; From Teens to Teens: sponsor, Rappahannock Area Kids on The Block. A grant of $500 will help high school students develop and present a puppet show to educate middle school students about disabilities, social issues, and alternatives to violence and gang membership.
