Youth in Philanthropy

What is Youth in Philanthropy (YIP)?
The YIP consists of 19-25 young people, in 9th -12th grades from the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline and the City of Fredericksburg. Each grant cycle involves young people practicing leadership, solving problems, studying proposals, managing budgets, working together and presenting views to an audience of peers and adults.  The YIP aspires to teach youth the importance of giving and serving; encourage youth involvement in philanthropy; and providing ways for young people to take action on issues that are important to them.

Over the past grant cycles our YIP participants have shown themselves capable of tackling and funding issues such as teen pregnancy, homelessness, domestic violence, sexual assault and other major social concerns. It is a learning experience for the youth both in the value to the community for each grant awarded and the realization that a limited amount of funding creates a higher expectation for each applicant.

Being a member of the YIP is an exciting and empowering opportunity which allows the youth to give away more money than the average community member donates in a given year. Along with this comes the understanding that they have a responsibility to decide which projects will receive funding based upon feasibility, the need in our community and collaboration with other groups.  If you’d like to join the YIP apply now.
