The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region honors the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Gladys West, a trailblazing mathematician whose work helped lay the foundation for modern GPS technology and whose quiet brilliance transformed the fields of science, navigation, and education.

Dr. West spent much of her career at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, where she played a critical role in developing precise mathematical models of the Earth—work that later enabled accurate satellite navigation systems used around the world today. At a time when opportunities for women and people of color in STEM were limited, she built a career defined by excellence, perseverance, and impact, becoming one of the many “hidden figures” whose contributions reshaped modern technology.

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. West remained deeply committed to education and community. Alongside her husband, Ira West, she inspired generations of students through mentoring, literacy support, and encouragement—particularly within King George County, where they made their home for decades. Their shared belief in the power of education continues to guide their legacy.

In partnership with the Dahlgren Heritage Museum, The Community Foundation is proud to steward the Ira and Gladys West Scholarship Fund, which provides annual support to graduating seniors from King George County pursuing degrees in mathematics or other STEM-related fields. The scholarship prioritizes high-achieving, motivated students with demonstrated financial need—ensuring that talented young people have access to educational opportunities that can change the trajectory of their lives.

As the Dahlgren community celebrates its rich history and the often-unrecognized individuals who shaped it, Dr. West’s story stands as a powerful reminder that dedication, intellect, and service can leave a lasting mark on the world.

In lieu of flowers, the West family invites those wishing to honor Dr. Gladys West’s memory to contribute to the Ira and Gladys West Scholarship Fund, helping ensure her legacy continues to inspire future scientists, innovators, and leaders.
