The Betty Merrill Scholarship for Excellence in Latin
The Betty Merrill Scholarship for Excellence in Latin was established by Ms. Merrill’s friends in recognition of her passion for and success in teaching. “Mrs. Merrill did what good teachers do: she breathed life into an allegedly dead subject. She inspired, she exhorted, she encouraged, she set high standards, and she expected kids to meet them… and they did.” The fund awards a scholarship of $500 or more to a James Monroe High School senior Latin student, with the highest cumulative GPA.
