Good News From Grantees: KGEF STEM Camp Success

Building a Workforce
The King George Education Foundation (KGEF) is on a mission to inspire and empower the next generation of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) leaders. They recognize the importance of providing immersive and hands-on experiences in STEM fields to young students, particularly during the crucial age range of 6 to 12.
To make their vision a reality, KGEF decided to apply for a grant from The Community Foundation's Duff "McDuff" Green Jr. Fund. They believe that this funding opportunity will help expand their existing KGEF Investment in STEM Summer Scholarships (KISS) program to provide scholarships for King George students to attend high-impact summer camps in STEM.
KGEF understand that these summer camps will serve as catalysts for change, building self-confidence, raising awareness of future STEM opportunities, and nurturing technical curiosities. They aim to counter societal expectations, role models, and peer pressure that often dissuade young women and minorities from pursuing STEM fields. By offering positive and immersive experiences at this critical age, KGEF thinks they can shape the trajectory of these students' academic and professional lives.
Moreover, the impact of this grant extends beyond individual students. It is a strategic investment in the future. By guiding more youth towards STEM careers, KGEF wants to create a local talent pipeline for King George County, home to the Navy's largest research and development laboratory. STEM careers not only offer upper-middle-income salaries but also have the potential to uplift the socio-economic conditions of lower-income students.
With the grant funds of $7,500, KGEF provided ten need-based scholarships for Camp Invention, a nationwide network of camps organized by the National Inventor's Hall of Fame. Scholarships will benefit students in grades 1-5, focusing on underrepresented demographics such as females, minority students, and those facing financial hardship. Additionally, two merit-based scholarships will be awarded for Space Camp, held at the prestigious U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
“We run this camp every year the week after school ends and it grows every year,” said Heather Hollis, camp leader. “I am amazed by how these kids come alive! They really get to be creative, learn, and make science fun!”
“I loved the Skate Park,” shared a 5th grade camper named Jacob. “It was so much fun building a model and then watch our skateboarders ride it! I even got to try other kids skate parks. It would be so cool to build a real one right here!”
The students who received support from the grant were overwhelmed with gratitude towards the foundation and KGEF for providing them the opportunity to attend a remarkable week-long STEM summer camp. Certified King George Teachers led the camp, supported by high school youth leaders and middle school leaders in training.
Elliah, a grade 6 camper, exclaimed, “I LOVE THIS CAMP! This is my last year that I can attend as a student, but I really hope that I can attend next year as a leader in training so that I can help other kids like me!”
The experience at Camp Invention was nothing short of amazing, leaving everyone involved inspired and motivated.
“I have been participating in Camp Invention since I was in grade school and have come back every year,” explained Ethan, a 12th grade youth leader. “I just like giving back. This camp really gives me hope for the future!”
With the support of The Community Foundation, KGEF is poised to ignite a spark of curiosity and passion for STEM within King George County's youth. They believe that by providing these transformative experiences, they can shape the future of their community and cultivate a generation of STEM professionals and role models.
The grant application process was seamless and straightforward, reflecting The Community Foundation's commitment to supporting local initiatives. KGEF sees this grant as the catalyst for change they had been seeking, offering greater access and opportunities in STEM, empowering King George students to reach their full potential and contribute to a brighter future for all.
