The Community Foundation Awards $78,442 to Regional Nonprofits from The Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund
The Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund of The Community Foundation has awarded $78,442 to seven regional nonprofits. This funding supports organizations that are working to promote recreation opportunities in the community, benefit our region’s youth and advance local historic and cultural preservation.
The following organizations have received funding in support of their programs:
PRESERVATION
Dahlgren Heritage Foundation $10,000 Museum Without Walls – Dahlgren Heritage Museum Expansion into the Virtual World
Funds to support digitizing the museum’s collection utilizing interns.
Northern Virginia Conservation Trust (NVCT) $9,750 Completing Crow's Nest Campaign
The Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve in Stafford County consists of over 3,000 acres of diverse wetland habitats, mature hardwood forests, and numerous wildlife species, many of which are threatened. Funds support a campaign focusing on 40 privately owned 2-acre undeveloped parcels of land that surround the western side of Crow’s Nest.
St. Mary of the Annunciation - Caroline County Cemetery Group Under the auspices of St. Mary of the Annunciation $15,000 The Oliver Cemetery Project: Preservation & Restoration of an Historic Cemetery in Caroline County
The Oliver Cemetery, is an historic, forgotten and severely neglected cemetery with unknown number of gravesites of people who lived, worked, and died in Caroline County over the centuries (some who were former enslaved people). Restoration and preservation of the site is necessary to advance local cultural history, and honor the memory of the many who lived, worked, and died in Caroline County throughout the ages.
Washington Heritage Museums $13,000 Critical Masonry Repairs to Historic Kitchen at the Mary Washington House
Washington Heritage Museums (WHM) will contract with a recognized leader in masonry preservation to undertake critical repairs to the fireplace of the historic kitchen at the Mary Washington House. While the historic kitchen dates to the period after Mary Washington’s death, it is an integral part to interpreting the lives of enslaved workers in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
RECREATION
Friends of the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail $7,500 Paving the Comorn Road Parking Area Entrance Apron and Ramp
Since its inception in 2006, the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail (DRHT) has been a beacon of recreational activity in our community. The Friends of the DRHT have worked tirelessly to make the trail into a true recreational epitome and nature trail for our entire community. Funds will be used to pave the entry areas at the Common parking area of the DRHT to allow for increased user traffic.
Rappahannock Area Office on Youth $12,700 Youth Activity Field and Complex
Support to expand and complete our existing sports complex at our Residential Group Home, Chaplin Youth Center, which serves male and female youth ages 12-17. The Center provides 24-hour supervision in a safe and structured environment, where residents are supported and encouraged to develop healthy, responsible behaviors, to return home and be successful in the community.
YOUTH
FailSafe-ERA $10,492 Preventing Generations of Incarceration
FailSafe-ERA will use funds in support of the Preventing Generations of Incarceration (PGI) program. PGI consists of 2-hour facilitated psychoeducational sessions based on cognitive behavioral therapeutic techniques over an 8-month period to improve outcomes for children and youth impacted by incarceration. This program also includes art therapy and culminates in a youth retreat.
The foundation is thankful for the participation of the Donor Services Committee and Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund Advisors in reviewing and selecting these programs for funding. They conduct an in-depth review of each application, participate in site visits, and conduct interviews with grant candidates as part of the final selection process.
