The Eunice Mae Roberts Legacy Fund was established in loving honor of Eunice Mae Roberts, whose life was marked by joy, resilience, and the meaningful connections she formed with those around her.

The oldest of seven children, Eunice Mae Roberts was born in Monticello, GA, on October 8, 1927, with Down syndrome. While she was turned away from formal educational institutions (they said they couldn’t teach her and sent her home after three days, as there were no services for people with intellectual disabilities at that time), she never let her disability stop her from wanting to learn nor from increasing and developing more independence.

She asked her siblings how to write her name and do basic addition—and she was able to grasp both. Eunice also got herself ready for church every Sunday, cooked meals, and cleaned up behind her family (she would say, “These folks don’t know how to make up a bed”). She also loved children and enjoyed singing and watching her soap operas, specifically General Hospital, As the World Turns, Another World, and Days of Our Lives, and she would fill her siblings in on the goings on of each when they returned from school every day.

Eunice passed away on December 31, 1993, but she would have loved attending camp. Just being around other people and talking to them brought her joy—she especially loved music, so that class would’ve been a highlight for her. It seems only fitting that this legacy foundation is developed to honor her—her love, her determination, and her persistence toward independence.

Camp Rainbow Connection is a week-long respite camp for adults with intellectual disabilities, designed to provide campers with an enriching, supportive, and joyful summer experience. At the same time, the camp offers families and caregivers a much-needed week of rest and renewal. Dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure each camper feels valued, supported, and empowered.

Through the Eunice Mae Roberts Legacy Fund, Eunice’s family seeks to honor her memory by supporting the mission of Camp Rainbow Connection—ensuring that other individuals with intellectual disabilities, and the families who care for them, can continue to experience moments of joy, independence, and respite.
