The William Lakeman Habitat for Humanity Fund
When Bill Lakeman died in July of 2005, he left behind the gift of a long history of thorough and precise journalism as a reporter for The Free Lance-Star. His 32 years of covering newsworthy events in Stafford and Spotsylvania Counties, as well as the City Hall beat, made Bill a mirror that delivered the facts in a skilled and professional manner.
Bill also left behind another gift. This gift is the William Lakeman Greater Fredericksburg Habitat for Humanity Fund at the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region. Bill set up this Designated Fund out of a desire to support the efforts of the Habitat to create simple, decent, and affordable housing in the Fredericksburg area for years to come. He felt strongly that the mission of this particular organization was one that reflected his beliefs and philanthropic commitment to the community he care for so deeply. The Community Foundation may accept gifts to this fund in Bill’s name, or in the name of others who shared his belief in the good work of Habitat for Humanity.
Bill Lakeman’s memory will live on in the Fredericksburg area and we are grateful for his ability to see the need, and to answer with a caring and generous solution.
About Designated Funds
A Designated Fund enables a donor to invest in the precise cause or community issues that they care most about.
When you set up a Designated Fund with the foundation, you define its specific charitable purpose, even its beneficiaries, at the fund’s inception. Designated Funds are strongly focused: once you have thoughtfully determined the way you want to structure your fund, grants will be distributed in perpetuity.
The Community Foundation administers the fund without significant change based on the donor's initial instructions. When a grant is made, the foundation monitors how the funds are used to ensure that the use fulfills your charitable goals.
