The Haven Make A Difference Fund
The Haven Make a Difference Fund was established in December 2011 by the South Carolina company Johnson Development Associates/The Haven at Celebrate Virginia II, LLC as a demonstration of their commitment to the people of the Fredericksburg area. Each year a percentage of the total fund is made available in the form of grants to benefit Fredericksburg public school teachers and children.
Grant funding for the 2023/2024 school year
- The online application for this funding opportunity will be available September 18, 2023.
- The deadline for submissions is October 23, 2023 by 5:00 pm.
- Awards will be announced the week of November 20, 2023.
Funds should be used within 12 months from the grant award.
The foundation’s Haven Make a Difference Fund and the Governor's Row Fund for Teachers and Students will award $18,000 in combined grants that benefit Fredericksburg City Schools teachers and students. Teachers may apply for grants that expand their teaching skills or provide classroom resources. Successful proposals will feature innovation, be based on solid research and best practices in teaching and include professional development that directly impacts students.

- Funding used to provide food, except for off-site training meal expenses.
- Funding spent for individual awards, clothing, or incentives for teachers.
- Funding spent on incentives for students (stickers, posters, etc.), unless there is an innovative and compelling justification for such an expense, e.g. persuasive research/evidence showing that the items will cause beneficial outcomes.
Reviewers will consider funding proposals for:
- Off-site and on-site professional development for teachers, to include tuition and travel expenses.
- Providing time off for promising practices such as building Professional Learning Communities (may include payment for substitute teachers, when deemed essential).
- Travel to schools (locally and nationally) that model innovative methods (such as Inquiry-Based Learning),
- Funding tobring a subject matter expert to the school/division as a speaker, trainer,or consultant, with follow up throughout the year.
What size grants will be made?
The minimum grant awarded will be $500 and maximum grant awarded will be $10,000.
How will grant applications be judged?
Competitive proposals will:
- Have a direct impact on students (particularly lasting benefits).
- Demonstrate highest quality professional development.
- Be rooted in and reflect the best available research.
- Be intellectually engaging and address the complexity of teaching.
- Make frugal use of grant funds.
Each year, The Community Foundation may suggest various program priorities. These are not mandatory but are of interest to our grant reviewers. This year, we are focused on:
- Creating Career/College Ready Lifelong Learners – at all grade levels.
- Community Engagement to benefit students, teachers, and families in the local community.
- Health and Wellness programs for students’ social, emotional, and physical health.
- Professional development for all teachers and staff.

Budget Narrative: Provide a narrative description explaining how grant funds would be spent if awarded
